A NATIONAL GOVERNING BODY
The following represents a list of things that might restore my faith and trust in US Diving. The list is in no special order even though some items are more important to me than others.
- The Organization's main focus should be the athletes' best interest. Winning International Gold Medals is the result of meeting those interests and not the main focus of them.
- The NGB should focus on increasing membership with both athletes and coaches. No diving coach should be left out for they are the recruiters for the sport.
- The NGB's focus should somehow include every diver, coach and program not just the top 10 or 20 clubs. It should develop an interest in anyone anywhere in this country that has an interest in diving and come up with a way that includes them.
- The organization should serve to facilitate the needs of the membership and not dictate what those needs might be.
- The organization should be informed of current trends in the aquatic industry and respond to them since they can affect the sport directly.
- Coach's input should be valued if it improves the experience of the athlete. Hidden agendas should be cause for concern for they may only benefit the people presenting them.
- Any organization should be user friendly. When you look for answers, you should be able to easily find the person who can give them.
- All rules, regulations, codes and future plans (LRP) should be written in a language that is easy to understand.
- Agendas would be set with the consent of the membership and not by a select few.
- All special projects should be overseen by someone with a diving background.
- Re-evaluation of programs, projects, policies and philosophies should occur periodically.
- Various levels of coaches should be mixed and not separated. Newer coaches can learn more from seasoned coaches by watching, questioning and listening to them coach.
- Membership fees should be affordable to all.
- Diver insurance should be elective since divers are essentially covered by a parent's health insurance program.
- Any certification or class offered should be elective and not mandated.
- Mandates would occur when and only if there is solid evidence to warrant them.
- Research grant money should be for the benefit of the athletes not the people who secure the grant.
- Coaches should have immediate access to whatever is discovered in these studies. That should be a condition for the grant.
- Members should be kept abreast of any outside influences that may have direct impact on the sport.
- Financial assistance to athletes and/or coaches should have certain stipulations tied to them and someone to check that those stipulations are being met.
- A meeting on finances should be part of the convention format and opened for discussion. This would include how much there is (including the Foundation) and how it is being spent.
- All members should be allowed to cast a vote on items that directly affect the level they coach.
- Dive requirements for the age groups should be general and not skill oriented. Younger age divers should be defining gross motor skills. Fine motor skills can be emphasized as they physically mature.
- All dives in the diving table should be available for use at an age group diver's discretion.
- The age group system should be separate from the senior program. One should be a feeder to the other and not a series of skill progressions toward it.
- Coaching requirements should be less restrictive the further from the National and International levels a coach is.
- The Novice and Intermediate participation should be set for a limited period of time. The underlying premise should be to advance into the regular competitive age groups as soon as possible.
- Every program instituted should be easy to oversee. Keeping track of the present certification system has gotten to be a nightmare to administer.
- Committee work should allow full input from everyone on the committee and they should sign off on it when the project is completed.
- The results of committee work should be voted on by the entire membership. A 50-50 split means the issue is either re-worked to satisfaction or dropped entirely.
- At the National and International level there should be a mix of veteran and upcoming coaches. This will guarantee some fluidity for those programs in future years.
- The idea of Regional and National training sites should be tabled until there is a definite need for them. At this time coaches and divers are not fully utilizing the one we have now.
This is a work in progress and will be added to, as more ideas are refined.
